Welcome to the Abergavenny Ministry Area

Welcome to the website of the Abergavenny Ministry Area in the Diocese of Monmouth, the Church in Wales.

The Ministry Area was formed in January 2023, joining together the Abergavenny churches of St Mary’s with Christchurch, and Holy Trinity with the village churches in Llanwenarth Citra, Llanellen, Llanfoist, and Govilon. The seven churches have formed the backbone of Anglican Christianity for generations, providing places of worship, prayer, mission and sanctuary. In fact, our village churches were built in the 12th and 13th centuries, before the Reformation. Christchurch, North Street; Christchurch, Govilon; and Holy Trinity are Victorian churches, although an altar stone in the latter came from the town’s original parish church, St John’s (built in the 14th century), which was deconsecrated when St Mary’s Priory Church became the parish church after the dissolution of the monasteries.

In addition, we have a number of facilities – from the Priory Centre and the historic Tithe Barn at St Mary’s, Abergavenny, to a number of smaller different church and village halls – available for hire for parties, retreats, social events and training days.
