Holy Trinity is in Trinity Terrace, Baker Street Abergavenny NP7 5BE. The church was built in 1839 as part of a major philanthropic gift from Miss Rachel Herbert. The other buildings include eight alms houses, a parsonage, and the church hall, which was originally a Girls’ School.
The church was originally established as a chapel to the Alms Houses and School and for the ‘Free Use’ of any who chance to worship there, especially the ‘Poor of Abergavenny’: at the time of its foundation many of the churches charged ‘pew rents’, which excluded the poor from being able to sit in church.
In addition to the weekly services, the church has flourishing Women’s Fellowship and Men’s Fellowship groups, which meet most weeks, as well as an ad hoc creativity group, the members of which decorate the church for Christmas, Easter and Harvest and look for other opportunities to bring their talents to the Abergavenny community. The church hosts the Ministry Area Open House service on the second Sunday of each month (except August), a more relaxed service aimed at families, regular worshippers and those who don’t usually go to church. It often includes short dramas to tell the Bible story. This is followed by tea & coffee and the monthly Soup Sunday – all are welcome to a lunch of home-made soup, cake, and fellowship in the church Hall, after the morning service.
The worship is supported by a small music group, which continually refreshes its repertoire with new Christian songs to augment the established hymnary. The music ranges from upbeat to reflective.
In the context of the liturgy for the Church in Wales, services at Holy Trinity are informal and welcoming. Tea and coffee are served in church after the Sunday service and most people stay to enjoy each other’s company and to share news or plans.
