At the end of 2021, we were contacted by the War Graves Commission about someone buried on our Churchyard who is eligible for a war grave.

His name was Alfred James Charles and he died on August 8, 1920, of Phthisis which is an old-fashioned name for Tuberculosis, and heart failure. He died at home, 14 Trinity Street.
He was 44 years old and had served as a private in the South Wales Borderers.
Because he died as a result of injuries received during his military service and before August 31, 1921, Alfred is eligible for a War grave.
His parents are buried in St Peter’s Churchyard. His father John Charles died in 1916, aged 73 and his mother, Elizabeth ‘Eliza’ Hughes Charles outlived him by 10 years and their grave is in St Peter’s Churchyard, marked by a stone.
Unfortunately, there is no evidence of the whereabouts of Alfred’s grave, so his official headstone has been placed by the porch of the church.
We propose to include a dedication of Alfred Charles’ headstone as part of our Remembrance Day ceremony at 11am on Sunday, November 8. The service starts at 10am in the Church (time to be confirmed).
We are keen to know if any of Alfred Charles’ relatives are still around. We think he had a brother or sister. If you think you are related, we would be delighted to hear from you.

There will be a Welsh language Eucharist at 11am on the first Sunday of every month at Christchurch, North Street, NP7 7EA. The service will be led by the Revd Dan Damon and is aimed at both fluent Welsh speakers and learners (the Order of Service will be printed in both English and Welsh) and will include some of the many beautiful Welsh hymns. The sermon will be in both Welsh and English and there’s even going to be a helpful list translating difficult or unusual Welsh words. There will be refreshments after the service. Some parking is available in the church grounds while there is also on-street parking. All very welcome.
